Creating Something New

Creativity is one of the most important aspects in life. We don't all need to be Michelangelo but nurturing creativity through art projects should be a regular part of our routine. Sadly, with the schedules most of us keep, it's very difficult to find the time to sit down and create something new. Some weekend in the near future or during the next vacation you take you should sit down and start a project. Hand painted furniture is a great way to be creative and productive while making your environment truly your own.

Since we all can't build furniture from scratch, I suggest checking out antique shops and yard sales. Build up a little knowledge about furniture so you can know what to look for. Be sure to test all the drawers in a dresser, check for splits in the frame of those bunkbeds and check out all the legs/ supports on chairs for any previous repairs. We don't want to have you spending a weekend painting a beautiful piece of art only to have it fall apart and end up as a show piece in the corner you have to warn people away from.

Start by stripping off any paint or sanding down any finish that still remains on the piece. Go over the whole surface with a good primer if you plan to paint every surface. If you don't, I suggest using a combination primer/paint. These are being made in more colors than they once were but the options are still a little more limited than I would like.

Be adventurous and feel free to mix some different colors. Just make sure to mix within each brand so that you don't end up with a lot of different paints drying at different rates. Speaking of drying, make sure that each coat cures entirely before using the piece of furniture. It's too easy to ruin a set of sheets and your nicely painted bunkbed frame simply by not waiting for it to fully cure.

After your new masterpiece has completely dried and cured it's time to clear coat. This is to seal everything up and make sure that the paint stays right where it should. If you plan to use your new piece of furniture outside make sure to use a UV protective clear coat so that it doesn't turn yellow or degrade and will help to protect your paint from UV damage as well. Oil based is your best bet for outdoor use and stick to brush on clear coat rather than spray coats. The spray is going to be thinner and require more coats to build up a thick enough coating to be effective. Even with brush on clear coat you are going to want to do three coats, letting the previous coat cure completely before applying the next one.

Painting furniture is a great activity to do with kids as well. It's an awesome way to make their room into their own space. Whether it's painting their new desk and work space or customizing their bunk beds with their favorite theme. Just don't let them know that you're having more fun than they are.
